The #1 Tip I Share with New Tarot Readers

It took me a long time to feel like I finally understood how to read Tarot.

I remember going into my local metaphysical shop and purchasing a Rider-Waite Smith tarot deck and a book that was supposed to help me "unlock the secrets of Tarot." I didn't bother looking at other decks because the person helping me said everyone needed to start with a Rider-Waite Smith deck.

From there, I spent about three months desperately trying to understand the cards that I pulled, and the keywords the book provided made no damn sense with the question(s) that I asked. I shelved my deck and donated the book because I thought Tarot wasn't for me.

About eight months later, I saw a flyer for a tarot course and decided to enroll. My birthday was a few weeks before the class started, and my partner gifted me The Wild Unknown tarot deck I had been eying on Instagram.

I hadn't used the deck before, and I was terrified when our teacher said we would practice reading the cards after she briefly shared the structure of a deck and some tips for reading Tarot. I tentatively interpreted the card I pulled for my partner, and I was shocked when she said it resonated with her. Imagine my surprise when this happened for each reading I did that evening.

I asked my teacher why I had such a hard time with the Rider-Waite Smith deck, and she looked at me and said, "You just didn't speak the same language."

This simple lesson has stuck with me for many years. Whenever I talk to folks interested in learning to read Tarot, I encourage them to find a deck that resonates with them instead of grabbing a deck that someone else says they should use.

Does the imagery excite you or draw you in? Do you see yourself and your community reflected in the deck? Working with the cards is much easier when using a deck that lights you up.

If you're curious about reading Tarot, I'm thrilled to announce the launch of an online, self-paced version of Intrepid Intuition: A Beginner's Guide to Tarot. This course is designed to help you ditch the tarot books and embrace your intuitive wisdom. I can't wait to see you on this journey of self-discovery and empowerment!
